Disney Parks Work Magic for Guests with Disabilities
Guests visiting the Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts will find a variety of services for Guests with disabilities. Many of these services also include options for those with other impairments, such as Guests who are hard of hearing, have a broken leg or have suffered some other sort of temporary injury.
Here is just a small list of resources available for Guests with disabilities at each of the Disney theme park destinations.
Walt Disney World Resort
Many Guests with disabilities visit Walt Disney World Resort each year. Most Walt Disney World attractions, restaurants, shops and shows are accessible to all our Guests. In some cases, however, Guests may need the assistance of a member of their party to fully utilize these areas.
There is a Guide for Guests with Disabilities, which provides a detailed overview of services and facilities available for Guests with disabilities. It is available at Guest Relations locations within all four Disney Theme Parks, two Disney Water Parks, vacation planners, front desk and concierge areas, and wheelchair rental locations.
This guide provides a detailed overview of the services and facilities available for Guests with disabilities, including information about:
- Companion restroom locations
- Auxiliary aids
- Telephone assistance
- Transportation facilities
- Specific attraction entrance and boarding procedures, as some attractions allow Guests to remain in a wheelchair and some are transfer accessible
Additionally, Guests with specific disability concerns can visit Guest Relations at any of the Disney Theme Parks or Disney Water Parks for additional information and assistance. The Cast Member they speak with will be happy to discuss in greater detail the available options to provide a memorable visit.
Hearing and Visual Disabilities
The Walt Disney World Resort recently introduced new devices for handheld captioning and audio description, which offer additional services beyond what was previously available at the Parks. Guests may obtain these devices at Guest Services with a deposit on a credit card, and there is no charge for use (other than the deposit). Handheld captioning provides a detailed on-screen interpretation of a ride, attraction or show for our hearing impaired Guests. The audio description device provides a detailed description of popular attractions, enabling Guests to better understand what is happening in the show scenes. These devices offer more content and description than simply listening to the voiceover on an attraction and are designed for our visually impaired Guests.
Trained service animals are welcome in most locations throughout the Walt Disney World Resort. All service animals must remain on a leash or in a harness at all times. Due to the nature of some attractions, service animals may not be permitted to ride. In those instances, a member of the Guest’s party must remain with the animal.
For some Guests, it may simply be an issue that they do not believe they have the stamina to wait in Walt Disney World attraction queues. We strongly suggest these Guests consider using a wheelchair, personal scooter or Electric Convenience Vehicle (ECV), as the distance between the attractions is much greater than the length of the queues. These can be rented inside the Parks.

The Disneyland Resort is committed to providing access to as many Guests as possible and provides select accommodations for mobility disabilities, hearing disabilities, visual disabilities and service animals.
The Disneyland Resort offers accommodations for Guests with mobility disabilities, including providing access to most attractions and offering rental wheelchairs and electric convenience vehicles (ECVs).
Assistive Listening systems, Reflective Captioning, Sign Language interpretation, Text Typewriter telephones, Handheld Captioning, Video Captioning and written aids are available to help Guests with hearing disabilities to enjoy the Disneyland Resort. Also, the Disneyland Resort recently launched an enhanced Sign Language interpretation program. This program provides Guests with hearing disabilities visiting the Disneyland Resort access to a schedule of events that are interpreted on a weekly basis without having to make prior arrangements. Audio Description devices, Braille guidebooks and digital audio tours are available to help Guests with visual disabilities.
Trained service animals are welcome in most locations throughout the Disneyland Resort; however, all service animals must remain on a leash or harness at all times. Cast Members are not permitted to handle service animals. Attractions at the Disneyland Resort are accessible to Guests with service animals via the standard queue.
Should any member of a party have a photosensitivity or seizure disorder, we recommend checking with a physician for specific instructions before visiting the Disneyland Resort. Specialty lighting and other visual effects are used extensively. Lighting effects include strobe lights and other pulsating lighting effects, to name a few. Entertainment, events and performances are continuously changing, and their show environments can vary throughout the day, making it impossible to list all possible lighting combinations. Therefore we are unable to give a definitive listing of strobe or lighting effects that may cause concern.
